Learning Objective

Understand the definition of active offer of French-language health services.

Introduction

Communication is central to quality health and social services. Active offer actualizes this principle and puts forward effective communication in line with a patient-centered care.

  • The active offer of French-language health services respects the principle of equity by:

    • Aiming to provide service quality comparable to that offered in English
    • being linguistically and culturally appropriate to the needs and priorities of Francophones living in minority settings

French-language health services must be clearly promoted and easily accessible at all times. This is an ongoing offer grounded in a person-centred approach.

  • Active offer is a measure that involves inviting the patient to express themselves in the official language of their choice. This invitation must precede the request for services and must be formulated proactively, with confidence and conviction.

The active offer of French-language health services is a regular and permanent offer of services to Francophones living in minority settings.

  • Quiz

    Feedback :

    The correct answer is:

    b) An occupational therapist greeting a client in both official languages.

Greeting in both official languages makes the availability of French-language services known without the person having to ask.

Francophones should not have to request health services in French. Active offer must precede the request for services.

Hiring a French-speaking person is certainly a step in the right direction, but that person must also be made aware of the importance of active offer of health services in French.

    Feedback :

    The correct answer is:

    b) Express themselves in the official language of their choice.

Canada has two official languages, French and English. Health services must be provided in both official languages.
